Sri Balaji (シリ バラジ) might just serve the best South Indian food in Tokyo. This happy pink colored restaurant in Nakameguro delivers on all fronts.
South Indian food is extremely varied but with a lot of rice and lentil-based dishes, vegetarians have many options. For example, dosas are crepes made from those 2 ingredients – rice and black lentils.
Best Dosas in Tokyo
Sri Balaji arguably has the best dosas in Tokyo. They’re masala dosas – full of spiced potatoes.
The crepe itself is perfect – soft but with a delicate paper crunch to it. The potatoes are equally divine and the different chutney and sambar for dipping each provide a distinct kick.
Best Dal Curry in Tokyo
Sri Balaji might also have the best dal curry in Tokyo. It’s really hard to match their dal tadka curry, and this is stacking it up against versions at other top South Indian restaurants in Tokyo. They cook the dal the right amount of time, ensuring the dal are properly soft and they literally melt in your mouth, alongside the ghee (Indian butter).
At first the curry is sweet but the plethora of spices come to the forefront and bring it to life – the cumin seeds, coriander, cardamom, turmeric, and the rest.
They prepare all their curries meticulously in this manner. They’re delicious, including their tikka masala and mutton palak curries (both pictured below).
